Semantic and Pragmatic Peculiarities of the Fear Metaphor Modeling in the Modern English Gothic Text (Based on the novels «Bitter Orange» by Claire Fuller and «The Beloved Girls» by Harriet Evans)

The Master's thesis is devoted to the semantic-pragmatic analysis of the fear metaphor modeling in modern English Gothic novels. The research material consisted of metaphors extracted by the method of continuous sampling from the works "Bitter orange" by Claire Fuller and "The Beloved Girls" by Harriet Evans. The sample size is 218 examples.
In the study, the semantic and pragmatic aspects of modeling the metaphor of fear are established and described on the basis of English-language texts written in the genre of the modern Gothic novel. The regularities of the functioning of the metaphor in the artistic text are analyzed, the pragmatic functions of the metaphor of fear and their influence on the reader's perception of the Gothic elements of the work are determined. During the semantic analysis of metaphors of fear, such types as physiological, gustatory, olfactory, auditory, visual metaphors are distinguished.
The author of the study also pays attention to the development of Gothic traditions in modern English-language literature, considering how traditional motifs and elements of the Gothic genre are transformed and adapted in the modern context. Special attention is paid to changes in the depiction of fear and its influence on the development of the plot and the change of characters.
